Call for Submissions: flash fiction and short stories

Short stories: We publish a few short stories each year, of 1,500-3,500 words. Submit your short story.

Submission period: We have rolling submission periods for flash fiction throughout the year. As of 2025, we have calls for submissions for a novella-in-flash once per year. Subscribe to our Substack to get announcements of calls for submission.

Before you submit: please read several of our recent stories. Our tastes are wide-ranging, but reading recent work will help you decide what to submit to us.

The submission fee of $4 for two flash fictions or $5 for four flash fictions includes a complimentary paid subscription to Fiction Attic.

If you want to publish your work in Fiction Attic, flash fiction is definitely your best bet. We publish a few flash fictions each month, and we publish short stories only a few times per year.

Call for Submissions: Novella-in-Flash

Once or twice a year, we publish a novella-in-flash. Word count: 5,000 – 20,000 words.

To be considered a “novella-in-flash,” the manuscript should be

  • comprised of very short pieces, up to 750 words each
  • Each chapter/flash should have some ability to stand alone (though this is less important than the overall quality of the writing and the way the pieces fit together)
  • Taken together, all of the flashes should tell a complete story.
  • We will also consider individual flashes within the manuscript for individual publication.

There is a $7 submission fee, which includes a complimentary three-month paid subscription to Fiction Attic. Subscribe to Fiction Attic on Substack to get alerts when our new submission period opens.

If we accept you novella-in-flash, we will publish it online in serial installments on Substack. Payment for your serialized novella-in-flash is $75. We may also publish it as a standalone ebook or in an anthology.

ESSAYS – personal essays and craft essays

We seek personal essays (emphasis on personal) of up to 2,000 words for publication online and possible future anthologies. We pay $20 for personal essays. We also seek essays on writing craft and the writing life. We pay $25 for craft essays and “on writing” essays.

Submit your essay on writing.

To see examples of the kind of work we publish, see the essays “Planting Trees” by Alyssa Kilzer, and “Spoken World,” by Brett Garcia Rose. We want essays that make us feel and make us think, essays that help us to see the world in a new way.

We do not publish academic essays, reviews, or opinion pieces.

Rights for stories published online: We ask that authors not publish the work in print or online until three months after it appears on the Fiction Attic website.

A note on simultaneous submissions: While we will do our best to read your work as soon as possible, it may take us a very long time to respond. For this reason, we not only accept but in fact encourage simultaneous submissions. That is, feel free to submit your manuscript elsewhere at the same time that you submit it to Fiction Attic. No hard feelings if it is accepted elsewhere and you need to withdraw the submission. We’ll be happy for you! We only ask that you let us know when it has been withdrawn so that we can remove it from our active submissions list.
