10 Questions: interviews with authors whose books we love

Editor: Michelle Richmond

Questions You Might Be Asking Yourself:

Q. May I submit poetry?
A. No. Nothing against poetry, but our staffing is extremely limited, and poetry is not on our agenda at this time.

Q. Why do the archives begin with Issue 17?
A. The first sixteen issues consisted of only one story per issue. Yes, we know it’s sad to think of a Fiction Attic without Letters From or Quoth the Raven or 10 Questions, sadder still to imagine a Fiction Attic without Wade, whom we love dearly; but that’s the way it was. Any story that has ever been published on Fiction Attic can be viewed by clicking the appropriate author name under stories by in the right hand column.

Q. May I submit artwork?

A. By all means! Please do! We welcome original artwork that suits our stories. Since you can’t possibly know what stories will appear in future issues, just send us your best work.

Q. I have this cool picture of an attic. May I send it to you?
A. Ditto from previous question. We love photos and paintings of attics. Please send as a jpg file.

Q. Do you accept simultaneous submissions?
A. We encourage them. As with most small literary journals, we may hold on to your work for a while before responding, so simultaneous submissions are in your best interest. Please do let us know when a story you submitted to us has been accepted elsewhere.

Q. Do you accept previously published work?
A. Please send only original writing. Artwork, on the other hand, may have been previously published.

Q. Whatever happened to your flash fiction contest?
A. Oh, you mean that contest where we gave out prizes of online bookstore gift certificates and Krispy Kreme doughnuts? It’s not gone, just on hiatus. We are tired, overworked, on deadline with our publisher for a book of our own, not to mention raising a toddler. (The use of the plural first person is really just a nicety, as there is, in fact, only one of us.) But don’t worry, the contest (and the doughnuts) will be back.
